Moth ID (Illinois, USA)
I was wondering if you could help me identify this little guy. I almost chopped it up with a weed-eater last summer, but luckily it was colorful enough to catch my eye. I’ve looked around and seen a few that are similar, but none that color, or with a head shaped like that. Thanks!
This is the caterpillar of the Walnut Sphinx Moth (Amorpha juglandis). Its found in the Eastern 2/3 of the United States, and feeds on the leaves of Hickory, Hazelnut, Walnut, Beech and a few others. It grows up to look like this…
